I’m Amanda Wethington, Principal with C3 Nonprofit Consulting Group. C3 exists to partner with the world’s most impactful organizations to navigate people and culture solutions. Our vision is a society in which nonprofit employment is synonymous with meaningful work, thriving culture, and competitive, fair, and sustainable pay.
Nonprofits are reimagining how they recognize and celebrate contribution. Thoughtfully designed performance ratings create meaningful connections between individual effort and mission outcomes. Using a practical approach, addressing employees’ desires for transparency, purpose, and growth can build stronger organizational cultures.
We’re seeing a return of performance awards.
First, you’ll want to focus on clarifying and communicating performance. Performance ratings establish a shared vocabulary that defines different levels of impact. Clear descriptions of quality work transform vague feedback into meaningful insights. Regular check-ins build mutual understanding about expectations and contributions. Transparent criteria for different performance levels help employees feel recognition is earned.
Next, think about creating meaningful recognition pathways. Start with flat market adjustments for all, then add performance-based increases on top. This approach feels additive rather than creating winners and losers within a fixed budget. Increase frequency to quarterly or annual awards for timely or more impactful recognition, and more frequent cycles create opportunities for spontaneous acknowledgement of achievements. Mission-aligned recognition reinforces organizational values while acknowledging exceptional impact.
Third, drive development through achievement. Performance rating discussions create natural moments for forward-looking conversations. Defined levels of contribution become launching points for new responsibilities. The cycle of goal-setting, impact assessment, and clear ratings builds momentum. Performance differentiation becomes more transparent and focused on mission achievement.
Performance awards bring renewed clarity to talent practices by celebrating contributions in meaningful ways. By establishing clear expectations, using consistent language to describe impact, and creating purposeful recognition moments, organizations strengthen their culture while helping employees feel genuinely valued.
Thoughtful performance recognition becomes a powerful tool that connects daily work to the change organizations seek to create.
